Many differences exists between the terms health and wellness. While most people think that these words convey similar meanings, their definitions remarkably vary. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, health is defined as, “the condition of being sound in body, mind, or spirit; especially freedom from physical disease or pain.” Simply put, health is a conditional state where a person can live in either a good health or bad health, based on their physical and emotional symptoms.
In addition, a person can alter their health by changing their lifestyle and habits to better or worse condition. For instance, if a person is classified as being unhealthy because of a weight problem or high blood pressure, they can start doing some exercises, following a diet or even change poor lifestyle habits. If this person eventually loses weight, the doctor may declare that they are now in healthier condition. However, again, the term health is conditional. This person can easily slip back into unhealthiness by returning to the habits that cause all this from the first place.
On the other hand, wellness is known as, “the quality or state of being in good health, especially as an actively sought goal.” Unlike health, which is conditional, wellness is a continuous state of optimal health that can only be maintained through persistent effort. If health and wellness were used as running terms, health would be a sprint and wellness would be the marathon! Moreover, wellness does account for the physical, spiritual or emotional state of a person.
Nevertheless, wellness refers to a person’s effort to strive for enhanced performance and overall well-being in the physical, spiritual and emotional realms!
Therefore, corporate wellness plans are essential to any company that seeks long-term success. Workplace health programs are not just promoting employee health, but also stressing the importance of wellness as a continuous state of well-being and health
For companies, this include less payment towards health plans and happier workers that will result in higher production rates in return.
That is to say, a person who is healthy and emotionally stable will perform much better than his follow who is dissatisfied with his or her overall health
Long after following this plan, it will result of the company’s employees profiting from a healthy lifestyle. A wellness lifestyle matters more than a person’s physical state.
Emotional and spiritual health is also taken into consideration for their significance and effect on employees. However, this does not mean that the importance of good employee health should be downplayed, but it is rather important to encourage all employees within a company to work hard in order to reach a state of being healthier.
Nevertheless, one should not stop once they reaches their desired health goals. A well-put plan towards wellness is a journey that constitutes effective corporate wellness plans.
